Call for Proposals
Our annual symposium for teachers and students of composition will be held this year on Thursday and Friday, October 24-25, 2019. This year’s symposium will again coincide with the National Day on Writing, an initiative of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). We hope you will join us for keynote speakers, workshops, and special writing events!
This year, we welcome keynote speaker, Isabel Baca, Associate Professor, University of Texas at El Paso and author of Service-Learning and Writing: Paving the Way for Literacy(ies) through Community Engagement, an edited collection that demonstrates how writing instruction and/or writing practice can complement community engagement and outreach in local, national, and international contexts. She founded and directs the Community Writing Partners program in the Department of English at UTEP.
We value our identity as a symposium that emphasizes the importance of conversation in how writing instruction transitions across grade levels and disciplines. Our theme this year seeks to look closely at how we, as teachers and learners, engage community both within and outside of our classroom walls. We seek fresh ideas that encourage innovative approaches to assignments, projects, and classroom activities, while also prizing the strength of foundational writing.
- How do we balance state or institutional determined learning outcomes/standards with community based work?
- How do we help students see that they function within circles of communities and how do we help them navigate these communities in and out of the classroom?
- How do we handle resource inequalities in community writing & engagement?
- How do we prepare students for college writing and beyond?
- How do we encourage critical thinking as a college readiness skill?
Types of Proposals:
- 20 min interactive presentations from middle school to college teachers. We will be pairing up teachers across grade levels, institutions, and disciplines based on these proposals
- 40 min interactive workshops from middle school to college teachers. We welcome individual or collaborative proposals from across disciplines, grade levels, and/or institutional levels
- Poster sessions that showcase the community-based work and/or project based learning you and/or your students are doing
