2013 Transitioning to College Writing Symposium

We invite you to join us on September 20 and 21 of this year, as writing teachers from college and high school settings in Mississippi and the Memphis areas meet here on the Ole Miss campus to explore challenges we all face in giving our students the best possible foundation for transitioning to college writing. Our program begins Friday morning with a welcoming address and moves into various workshops, keynote addresses, round tables, and “unconference” forums that we hope will foster dialogue, encourage the communication of values and teaching practices, and promote understanding between all of us.

During our two days together, we will engage with the following issues to help high school and community college students make a successful transition to four-year college writing:

  • Help each other understand the landscape of college writing courses at different levels, thus closing the divide between perceived and actual college-writing expectations
  • Share ideas, solutions, and strategies for increasing student engagement and motivation with Mississippi writing teachers
  • Identify what is expected of college writers
  • Help students develop as lifelong writers, such as creative writers, citizen writers and workplace writers

Also, attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet and network with other teachers of writing from high school and college venues
  • Use and share great resources: handbooks, textbooks, assignment swaps, and more
  • Map the landscape of writing in our area, using guided activities and workshop sessions
