Special Events

We have two special events that we want to share with you. Read on for details.

Friday Evening Reception

Our reception opens Friday afternoon at 5:00 pm and continues until 8:00 pm. This will be an excellent opportunity to explore our new Writing Center, network with other teachers, to meet and talk with our visiting scholars, France di Lauro from the University of Sydney and Amber Jensen from Edison High School in Fairfax, Virginia.

The reception this year is a bit different: we will run concurrent sessions during the reception, where the food will be set up in our new Lamar Hall conference room. The conference room is across from our new Writing Center, which will be open during the reception time. So, grab a plate, take in a workshop (or two), and enjoy the company of our guests and attendees!

Special Session of MCTE, the Mississippi Council of Teachers of English

This event takes place during lunch Saturday, 12:00 – 1:30 pm; lunch is a build-your-own taco or salad catered by South Depot Tacos courtesy of the UM School of Education.

The MCTE, which has a long and rich history as an affiliate of the NCTE, has for the past few years been a bit quiet. Now, under the leadership of Marilyn Schultz of Delta State University and Rosemary Oliphant Ingham of the University of Mississippi, the MCTE is once again gaining traction as an association to support English teachers throughout Mississippi.

Everyone is invited to stay for lunch and learn more about the MCTE, its goals, and its plans for the upcoming year. English professors and instructors from Mississippi State, Jackson State, University of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi College, and Mississippi University for Women are also part of the reactivation of the MCTE and plan to be present at Saturday’s luncheon.
